The following rulings are derived from the Hanafi Madhab using Imam Shurunbullali's classical fiqh book Nur-al-Ida.

The tarawih is an emphasised Sunnah for both male and female and if neglected will cause an individual to become sinful. To pray the tarawih in a communal is a collective Sunnah.

Its time is after the Isha prayer until the arrival of dawn. It is best to delay the Witr prayer until after the tarawih; this is also recommended to be read in a communal during Ramadan.

It is recommended to delay the tarawih prayers to shortly before one third of the night has passed or just prior to half of it. Though some scholars recommend tarawih be offered before half the night has passed.

Tarawih consists of 20 rak’ahs consisting of ten pairs according to the consensus of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). After four rak’ahs it is recommended to sit and rest.

It is Sunnah to recite the whole Qur’an during the Tarawih prayers once in the month of Ramadan.

If a person fails to offer the Tarawih by himself or in a group (in its appointed time), it cannot be made up later because Tarawih is the Sunnah of a specific time. If a person makes up Tarawih, it is regarded for him as voluntary prayer, not Tarawih.
